Harriet Klausner. However the ending is very predictable. I am a fan of Sheldon's book and this one does not meet expectation.

Nowhere near the quality of Sheldon's previous book on the rich and famous. Tilly follows all of the cues of the famous writer, keeping it timely.
I loved the reference to "Wall Street", the recent market crashes, and Burnie Madoff. Excellent read.
Sidney Sheldon's After the Darkness - Sidney Sheldon - E-book
I will be reading it again. I did so primarily because of seeing Sidney Sheldon's name on the cover. I've read and enjoyed many of his books over the years. Sheldon's books have always been somewhat soap opera-esque, taking the reader into the world of the filthy rich and powerful, and often showing us how lust and greed spin out of control. In that way, this book is no exception.
Tilly Bagshawe takes up Sheldon's torch in the penning of this novel. Bagshawe introduces us to the Brooksteins, a couple whose wealth and power was the product of the big Wall Street boom. Lenny Brookstein had not always had money, but he had created and managed one of the largest hedge funds in the market. After the Madoff scandal and the crash of he big investment firms they find their own company under scrutiny and their way of life unraveling.
Lenny dies and the investigation continues, revealing that billions of dollars are missing from the fund. Grace knows nothing about the business, and can't explain, but since she is a partner in the firm she is held responsible. The puublic already new her as a rich, fashionable, socialite. Now they viewed her as the villian that stole their life savings. Grace faces a great deal of adversity as the who-done-it mystery of the missing money is unwound. The reader can see some of the plot twists coming but, for the most part, this story makes for an enjoyable "beach read" type book.
It is not as epic or tightly written as Sheldon's thrillers, but Sheldon was a master of this genre. I enjoyed the story from start to finish. Grace's relationships with everyone around her are what kept me hooked, she seemed like someone who could be a friend so I had to know what happened to her. It's very timely, touching on the recent failures and bailouts of big trading houses, banks and insurance companies, and tells what happens when THE New York City 'IT' couple, Lenny and Grace Brookstein, crashes and burns. Lenny doesn't come back from sailing one day, and in short order, his company, the biggest hedge fund out there think Enron-size fails disastrously.
Grace's life changes immeasureably.
The rest of the novel is a fast-paced thriller that follows Grace as she tries to solve the puzzle of her life. A fun, quick read, not very deep, and not too tough of a mystery I had a strong suspicion of the denouement pretty early on. A good summer read - I give it 3. I have never read Sheldon before so I have no reference to that but to me it was like I was reading a story that was happening now, with the stock market crash and so many references to the current situations we as american's are going thru. From Wall street to Bernie Madoff to prison scene's to rape scenes. Right in the beginning Tilly Bagshawe grabs us with a court room scene where part of me felt sorry for Grace and part of me wanted to hate her, and from then I was hooked and couldn't put it down, even when my doctor walked in to do my exam!!
This book has so many current details I couldn't help but keep reading and to watch Grace grow from a timid shy lady of leisure to a strong stand on her own woman was what kept me going. I don't want to give away too much of the book because this is a must read for anyone who likes mystery crime drama novels. Grace Brookstein is the young wife of hedge fund manager Lenny Brookstein. Lenny has raised himself from abject poverty to billionnaire by hard work and incredible financial acumen; Grace was born both rich and entitled, but lost her father at an early age.
She is Lenny's perfect trophy wife, and he is her perfect father figure.

Okay, one of the alliances was a surprise. None of that, however detracted from my enjoyment of the story. The fast pace, rapid plot turns, and hugely unlikeable evil antagonists and there are many kept me turning the pages. Thanks LibraryThing Early Reviewers! The principle character in After the Darkness is Grace Brookstein. Her character goes through so many changes and growth from the start of the story. Grace is the wife of Lenny Brookstein, who died while out on his boat and the death is ruled a suicide.
Lenny is the financial wizard behind an investment company called Quorum. After the Darkness starts out with Grace on trial for theft of billions of dollars through Quorum. She is innocent and feels that she will be cleared of all charges. Her trusting nature is what causes her many problems and heartbreak through the story. Those who she thought were her family and friends turn on her and don't want to help her during her trial and even after her day in court.
She is surprised by her family's reaction.
